A concussion is a type of mild traumatic brain injury caused by an incident that “shakes” the brain inside the skull. It can (but does not always) result in loss of consciousness.

SYMPTOMS MAY INCLUDE (but are not limited to):

  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulties with concentration
  • Difficulties with memory recall
  • Light and/or noise sensitivity
  • Irritability and/or sadness

Concussion Management has improved immensely over the past decade and the research has proven that concussions are treatable with the correct care and guidance from your doctor and health care professionals who are trained in concussion management.

STEP 1 Seek medical assistance immediately by a qualified physician.

STEP 2 Book an assessment at Impact Physiotherapy & Performance with a qualified Physiotherapist for a comprehensive concussion evaluation.

  • Comprehensive physiotherapy assessment
  • Individualized resting strategies and education
  • Modification of academic and/or employment demands
  • Neurocognitive computer based test (ImPACT – Immediate Post-Concussion and Cognitive Testing)
  • Balance and Postural testing
  • Visual Coordination Screening
  • Referral for specialized optometric assessment where warranted
  • Physical exertion testing for return to play/work
  • Regular updates to your family physician to aid in return to work/play decisions.

Baseline testing provides a point of reference for comparison of your physical and cognitive function before and after injury. In the event of a concussion, this helps your health professional more accurately assess and treat your condition and better individualize your treatment program.

  • Computerized Neurocognitive test (ImPACT) measuring memory, attention span, information processing speed, reaction time
  • Balance and postural stability testing
  • Visual Coordination screening

Assesses ability of the eyes to work together in a coordinated fashion. (This is not comparable to an optometric exam and does not replace your routine optometric care.) Please contact our clinic for further information (scheduling, cost) regarding baseline testing for your sports organization, sports team, or on an individual basis.

Impact Physiotherapy & Performance is in no way affiliated with the acronym ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion and Cognitive Testing) which is a specialized Neurocognitive test designed by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh.
